EAST TIMOR: As the UN force begins deploying outside the capital Dili there are signs violence is on the rise. A Dutch journalist has been shot. Several buildings are on fire in Dili. A World Vision worker says the security situation is sufficiently safe for aid workers to come in in the next 48 hours.
WEST TIMOR: Reports from West Timor say there is growing evidence that militias are setting up their bases there. Lines of trucks bring families of militia members over the border. The mood in Atambua is dangerous, says a reporter.
FIREFIGHTERS: Firefighters Union are deploring the amount of extra over-time being worked by professional fire-fighters.
CIGARETTE SUIT: The US govt is suing the world’s biggest tobacco companies accusing them of an orchestrated campaign of deceit and multi billion dollar health costs.
ANSETT: Ansett NZ pilots have offered to work for no pay over the school holidays. They say it is not a publicity stunt.
WORLD POPULATION: The UN population fund has announced that the sixth billion inhabitant of earth will be born on October 12th.
