EAST TIMOR – UN – Destruction – Food Drops – China State Visit – Clinton Dinner Date
EAST TIMOR – UN: The UN Security Council could pass a resolution within 24 hours to allow a international force to use force to achieve peace in East Timor. A force of around 8000 is expected to be approved.
EAST TIMOR – DESTRUCTION: There is growing evidence that the Indonesian military and militias are using the delay in peacekeeper arrival to continue to destroy Dili and other cities in East Timor.
EAST TIMOR – FOOD DROPS: The UNHCR have criticised the military for not enabling food drops to the refugees. Australia says it will begin air-drops of food-aid unilaterally tomorrow. They could not start today as all available aircraft were busy with an evacuation.
CHINA STATE VISIT: Sensitivity over a “free Tibet” protest in Christchurch delayed Chinese President Jiang Zemin’s arrival for dinner.
PRESIDENT CLINTON: President Clinton and Chelsea Clinton dined last night with actors Tem Morrison, Chris O’Donnell and Lucy Lawless in Queenstown. He will leave tonight.
