1. EAST TIMOR - Voting in East Timor is underway. Half of all eligible voters were outside booths as they opened. There have been no reports of violence or problems, though communications to some areas is poor. Booths may be opened again tomorrow because of the turn out. The UN is happy with the way things are going.
2. DEFENCE REPORT - A damning report into how our $1.6 billion defence budget is spent. A select committee has called for an overhaul. The report questions the need for an airforce, says the purchase of F16s should be reviewed, that two support boats would be better than another frigate and defence equipment is run down. Three National MPs refused to sign the report as they disagreed.
3. CAR SEIZURES - There are claims that new laws to seize the cars of repeat offenders and cars considered dangerous as the offenders are just going out and buying new ones.
4. RUGBY - The odds on the All Blacks
winning the world cup have lengthened after their defeat by
Australia. However there were no signs of panic as the squad
was named. Ian Jones and Glenn Osbourne are back in, Rhys
Duggan is the
newcomer.
