Bradman Dies – Aus/NZ Migration Deal – Jamieson Murder – Smoking And Drinking
- BRADMAN DIES: Australian cricketing legend Sir Donald Bradman, regarded as the greatest batsman of all time, succumbed to the effects of pneumonia at his Adelaide home, age 92. Australian Prime Minister John Howard, in New Zealand at the time, said it is not possible to find words to adequately express the importance of the man in Australia. Sir Donald played 52 tests and averaged 99.94 runs, an average no one expects to be surpassed. He was bowled for a second ball duck in his last innings, needing only four runs to bring his average to an incredible 100. Sir Donald played only one test against New Zealand, in 1937.
- AUS/NZ MIGRATION DEAL: Australian Prime Minister John Howard signed a deal with New Zealand that will make it much harder for Kiwis in Australia to get social welfare benefits. Prime Minister Helen Clark said the arrangement was inevitable. National leader Jenny Shipley met Mr Howard this morning. She says the deal could harm New Zealand families in Australia. Mr Howard said suggestions the deal reflected xenophobic Australian attitudes – that the deal is largely to stop Maori and Pacific Islanders settling in Australia - was “preposterous, even offensive.”
