Waterfront Dispute – Nuclear Shipments – Murdered Jogger – Suspicious Toddler Death – Road Takes Toll – Galapagos Oil Spill – Marion’s Fortune

- WATERFRONT DISPUTE: Prime Minister Helen Clark is urging Carter Holt Harvey to sort out the Waterfront dispute in Nelson. Local wharfies are picketing, as casual labour from out of town are loading ships. The Prime Minister said we should not underestimate how strongly New Zealanders support the use of local labour. National says the dispute is in danger of escalating. In Nelson, about 100 local wharfies are protesting presently, and plan to stay overnight.

- NUCLEAR SHIPMENTS: A ship is carrying nuclear waste from a Sydney nuclear research facility to France. In Wellington, the New Zealand Government called for systems of notification to be put in place, and for the highest safety standards to be observed. The shipment’s exact course is unclear. Meanwhile, a boatload of nuclear waste from France to Japan is due in the pacific next month.

- MURDERED JOGGER: Police have confirmed that Wellington woman Margaret Lynne Baxter was alive when she was hit by a car while jogging in Hastings. She was taken from the scene of the accident to another location, where she was murdered. One News understands Ms Baxter was killed with a knife. The Identity of the 23-year-old man charged with her murder remains secret.

- SUSPICIOUS TODDLER DEATH: Masterton police are investigating the suspicious death of a two-year-old toddler.

- ROAD TAKES TOLL: Four people have died on New Zealand’s roads in the last 24 hours. In one crash, a tanker crashed, spilling its load of kerosene.

- GALAPAGOS OIL SPILL: Ecuador has declared a national emergency as it tries to contain an oil spill off the Galapagos Islands, where many endangered and unique species are threatened by the spill.

- MARION’S FORTUNE: BNZ has credited North Canterbury woman Marion Fortune’s bank account with $62 million. BNZ has apologised for the mistake, which seems to be the result of a misplaced decimal point by a bank employee in Wellington.
