Petrol Price War – Ferry Breakdown – Doherty Compensation – Aussie Economy Slows – Consumers Confident – Bad Boys

- PETROL PRICE WAR: Kiwi motorists are benefitting from a petrol price war, as oil companies slug it out for market share. Prices are the lowest they’ve been in 6 months. Consumers can now expect to pay 102 cents for 91, and 107 cents for 96. BP led the fall today, but Shell and others soon matched them. In the past the companies have tended to move prices together, but this time they are undercutting each other in an all out price war.

- FERRY BREAKDOWN: Tranz Rail’s ferry trans-Tasman Aratere has broken down again, disrupting travel plans for thousands of disgruntled holiday makers. The ferry is out of action for four days. Tranz Rail said it’s major priority is to clear the backlog of stranded passengers, putting them on extra sailings of the Lynx fast ferry and the Arahura.

- DOHERTY COMPENSATION: The Government has said it will compensate David Doherty, the man imprisoned for three years after being wrongly convicted for raping an 11 year old neighbour. The Government has not said how much Mr Doherty will be paid, it is waiting on a recommendation from an independent assessor, Stuart Grieve, QC. Judicial compensation is rare in NZ but earlier this year a man received nearly half a million dollars for being wrongly concocted of molesting his son.

- AUSSIE ECONOMY SLOWS: While New Zealand’s economy appears to be on the mend, Australia’s is slowing down. A survey shows manufacturing at an 8 year low. The downturn of the Australian economy is stronger than was expected by experts. With Australia being a big export market for New Zealand, we need to be wary, especially with the US economy, another big market, looking to slow down.

- CONSUMERS CONFIDENT: Consumers in New Zealand are the most confident they’ve been since march, according to a new survey. The survey showed 46% were optimistic and only 26% pessimistic. Consumers in Southland were the most positive, followed by Auckland and Canterbury.

- BAD BOYS: United Future leader Peter Dunne has published a list of the worst behaved members of Parliament in the House. National’s Gerry Brownlee came in third, ACT’s Rodney Hide was second, but Mr Dunne says Labour’s Trevor Mallard is the worst behaved by a country mile, being asked to leave the house four times.
