Tibet Protesters – Wairarapa Toddler – Murder Suicide – Buyer Beware

- TIBET PROTESTS: There has been searing criticism of police over their handling of protesters during a visit by the president of China last year. An investigation found they ignored the rights of protesters and found some police gave unconvincing and inaccurate evidence at a select committee investigating the incidents. Chinese President Jiang Zemin faced protests against China’s human rights record in Tibet everywhere he went in New Zealand. Police say they were put under extreme pressure by Chinese officials, Zemin hates seeing protests when he travels overseas. The select committee makes seven recommendations, including calling for clearer guidelines separating Police and Government, coming after accusations that the then Prime Minister Jenny Shipley had undue influence on the police. Meanwhile lawyers for a group of Wellington protesters say they will be getting an apology and compensation from the police over the incidents.

- WAIRARAPA TODDLER: One news can now report details of the crown’s case against two women charged in relation the death of the Wairarapa toddler known as Lillybing, that were suppressed yesterday. Lillybing had an egg sized bruise to her head and severe genital injuries. The Crown says that instead of taking Lillybing to hospital for the bruise, the women injured the girl further trying to treat it with scalding water. The two women are jointly charged with manslaughter and failing to provide the necessities of life.

- MURDER SUICIDE: Another court heard today that a Nelson woman who killed her three children and then herself was depressed.

- BUYER BEWARE: A real estate agent has fallen foul of the commerce commission for promising more than he could offer in his advertising of some properties. One home advertised as a beachside property is separated from the Beach by State Highway one, and a reserve that obscures the view of the sea. The agent copped a $3600 fine.
