US ELECTION: The Florida Supreme Court has heard arguments in a case that could decide the US Election. In the crucial hearing the justices put searching questions to the lawyers.
TRAIN SMASH: Tranz Rail says it is too early to say what caused a train smash in Hilmorton, Chirstchurch. Carriages have been tossed from the tracked in the collision.
CELLPHONE OUTAGE: Telecom says its 025 network is not operating at the moment and says it doesn’t know why.
HEALTH REFORMS: Criticisms of the Health Reforms passed last night from independent practitioners say that the reforms are based around hospitals and not the community.
MISSING PARTY MONEY: The Labour Party may lay charges following the discovery of $27,000 of missing party funds. The money has been paid back.
EU SUMMIT: European leaders have discussed doubling the size of the EU this morning at a summit marred by violence.
POLL: An opinion poll finds that 50% of NZers think NZ is on the right track and 38% think it is on the wrong track. This compares to 8% net pessimists in the last poll. The poll also finds Labour on 41% leads again in the crucial party vote.
UK STABBING: Britain’s home secretary wants children to “tell what they saw” in relation to the death of a young boy in a school bullying incident gone wrong.
AUCKLAND RAIL CORRIDOR: Auckland is seeking funding to take over the Auckland rail corridor. But Alasdair Thompson of the EMA says that not enough is known about the plans for the rail corridor.
MORTGAGE RATES: The first of the major banks has moved to lower mortgage interest rates in response to Wednesday’s Reserve Bank. Wespac is lowering fixed and capped rates by up to 0.3%.
RIFLE RANGES: The Army is closing shooting ranges because a study has found ricochets travel further than expected.
