- MAORI OUTNUMBERED: Three Government ministries have held meetings for Maori in 10 regions during the past two months to consult them on global warming, but only 75 Maori turned up, and it is understood officials outnumbered those attending at some meetings.

- LUNCH WITH NATS: In a lunch date bound to raise eyebrows, outspoken Maori MP John Tamihere played hooky from the Labour Party conference in Wellington to make a foray into the National Party’s suburban enclave in Epson, Auckland yesterday.

- TOAST MARTINBOROUGH: Former All Black Josh Kronfeld played harmonica with bluesman Midge Marsden for the crowd at the Toast Martinborough Wine and Food Festival, held in the most unseasonable weather of its nine year history during the weekend.

- RURAL PHONES: About 380,000 rural and small town phone customers will still be protected under the Kiwi Share agreement, even though Telecom is considering bringing in other firms to run provincial services.
