BIOSECURITY: The Biosecurity Minister says the country’s borders are secure following the release of a number of audits highly critical of border control procedures.
AUSTRIAN TUNNEL FIRE: Austrian Authorities say they have almost completed the identification of 170 people killed in a tunnel fire on an Austrian ski train. The majority of the dead were Austrians and Germans.
US ELECTIONS RECOUNT: All the votes in Palm Beach County Florida may now be recounted by hand. After 1% of the votes were recounted by hand as a sample a further 19 votes were found for Al Gore. The county has now announced a full hand recount. A spokesman for George Bush says that Al Gore should admit defeat.
DAVID TUA: The TAB says that the David Tua fight in Las Vegas yesterday was far and away the largest sports betting occasion in NZ ever with around $2.6 million gambled on the fight.
CERVICAL CANCER: The HFA says there is not enough evidence that new cervical screening methods work for them to fund the new technology.
SKIN CANCER: New research shows a big jump in the number of skin cancers to 65,000 a year. The Cancer Society wants more money spent on skin cancer prevention and control.
ISRAEL: The Israeli PM Ehud Barak will meet US President Bill Clinton later today. In the latest violence a 16-year-old Palestinian has died today. bringing the death toll to 206.
BOMBING: British Intelligence has foiled a plot to detonate a huge bomb at an event in London.
CLIMATE CHANGE: Government officials will join many nations in the Hague this week to discuss climate change and the Kyoto Protocol.
GISBORNE RAIL: The
Gisborne Chamber of Commerce has launched a plan to keep the
railway line to Gisborne open. The Chamber says it has Jim
Anderton’s
support.
