US Elections – Motorsport Manslaughter – Tua Fight, Samoa, South Auckland
US ELECTIONS: The Florida recount is almost complete and George Bush seems to still be in the lead. Bush leads Gore by 229 votes according to Associated Press after totals have come in from 66 out of 67 counties. The focus is on Palm Beach county. Pat Buchanan has come out in support of the Palm Beach ballot having been wrongly counted. Al Gore has 50 lawyers in Florida preparing for a legal challenge. Some lawyers acting for voters have asked for a re-vote in Palm Beach county. Florida law is clear on how the ballot paper should be drawn up and the Palm Beach ballot is wrong. Courts are unlikely however to be willing to correct the mistakes in Palm Beach. Late night talk shows are having fun with the situation.
MOTORSPORT MANSLAUGHTER: Motorsport NZ is standing by four volunteer officials charged with manslaughter over an accident during a motor race in Queenstown four years ago. Motorsport NZ says charging the four men involved in organising the race sends a warning to all sports officials.
TUA FIGHT: Tua fans are turning up in droves in Las Vegas with two days to go to the big fight. Mike King is leading a Tua tour and is planning to lead the cheering for Tua. Fans are really enthused to be there and were very pleased to get to meet Tua in person.
TUA FIGHT - SAMOA: Tua supporters in Samoa are wearing necklaces in support of Tua. The PM of Samoa has asked people to wear special red necklaces. The necklace was formerly reserved for chiefs and speakers. The price of the necklaces has doubled. Necklaces are being exported to NZ and the US.
TUA FIGHT – SOUTH AUCKLAND: There is a song contest in South Auckland in support of David Tua. Radio Samoa says there is only one rule David’s name has to be mentioned. Other Tua fans are saying it in money with 85% of the money going on Tua. The community is planning a ticker tape parade when Tua comes home – whether he wins or loses.
