- PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS: The race for the White House is still too close to call, with the contenders, Democrat Al Gore and Republican George Bush, swapping the lead all afternoon. Bush has 237 electoral votes at the current count, with Gore trailing by six. Many States - including Florida, which will reap 25 electoral votes - are still too close to call. The candidate who gets 270 electoral votes will win. In the US, less than 50 percent of the people vote. At this stage, it appears the candidate who wins Florida will win the White House.
- Bush has just taken Alaska for 3 votes. Bush has also just taken Arkansas for 6 votes. He now has a 15 point lead.
- Al Gore has just taken Washington, worth 11 votes, narrowing Bush’s lead to four points.

- CONGRESS ELECTIONS: In the House of Representatives, the Republicans have 223 seats to 210 Democrat seats. In the Senate, the Republicans have an 8 seat majority. The most closely watched senate seat was New York, which has been taken by Hillary Rodham Clinton, making her the first wife of a president to win a place in the senate.
