People’s Bank – US Elections – Greenpeace Waste – Fire – Snake Hunt – Tua Support

- PEOPLE’S BANK: The Government is just one step away from setting up a people’s bank. Finance Minister Michael Cullen says the business case looks strong. But it will cost 80 million dollars to get off the ground, and it is not known where that money will come from. Deputy Prime Minister Jim Anderton says there are risks associated with the venture, but he says most banks are turning healthy profits at the moment, and there is no reason why the people’s bank wouldn’t too.

- US ELECTIONS: The race for the White House is drawing to a close, and it is too close to call. With one full day of campaigning left, Republican candidate George W. Bush’s lead in the latest poll has widened to 5 percent. Americans living in New Zealand are watching the campaign from afar.

- GREENPEACE WASTE: Greeenpeace has been censured for discharging sewerage into Nelson Harbour. Greenpeace says the waste was biodegradable and complied with regulations.

- FIRE: A scrub fire alongside the motorway north of Wellington is delaying northbound traffic.

- SNAKE HUNT: The hunt is on for a live snake that could be on the loose in Auckland. A recently shed snakeskin was found in an Auckland suburb. Experts believe the snake is a python or a boa. MAF wants to hear from anyone who may have seen the snake, the number is 0800 809 966.

- TUA SUPPORT: Heavyweight contender David Tua is being backed by the congregation at Las Vegas’s own Samoan church. The congregation is being urged to pray for Tua to win his bout with heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis. The church hopes Tua will join them the day after the fight – it will be Sunday.
