TAIWAN PLANE CRASH: Investigators are looking into whether a Singapore Airlines 747 hit something on the runway before it crashed yesterday morning. There was construction equipment on an adjacent runway. Family members of two Kiwis in the accident are expected to arrive in Taiwan shortly.

MATCH FIXING: Former cricket captains from six countries have been named in an Indian match fixing report. Former Kiwi captain Martin Crowe says he didn’t do it.

NEW FAST FERRY: Tranzrail has leased a new – bigger – fast ferry for the Cook Strait. A spokesperson says a review has recommended taking the freight ferry Arahanga out of service and replacing it with an all round – larger – fast ferry.

SWISS CANYONING: Swiss officials have charged eight employees of a Swiss adventure tourism company with negligence causing death in relation to a canyoning accident which killed several antipodean tourists.

MIDDLE EAST: Clashes between Israeli soldiers and Palestinians have continued today, with another five dead, as fellow Nobel Peace Laureats Shimon Peres and Yasser Arafat prepare for a meeting.

MAORI CRIME REPORT: Maori are divided over a government report written by former Police Commissioner Peter Doone which says that the causes of Maori offending lie in disadvantage.

GE TREES: A hearing into an application to conduct trials of GE trees is underway. Those opposed to the trial say it is impossible to keep the trials safe.

ONE DAY CRICKET: Play may resume in the fifth cricket one-day match in Durban which has been disrupted by rain.
