Plane Crash – Dyson Affair – Doone Report – Body Found – Fireworks – Match Fixing

- PLANE CRASH: Two New Zealanders were amongst over 100 people rescued from a crashed Singapore Airlines jet in Taiwan. 78 people are confirmed dead and 101 lived through the crash, which happened during takeoff, in typhoon conditions. The Pilot said the plane hit an unidentified object on the runway and skidded off the runway. Singapore Airlines had previously never had a fatality on one of their flights.

- DYSON AFFAIR: There has been criticism of the Government’s handling of the Ruth Dyson drink-driving affair. National have said Miss Clark’s comments yesterday were too soft. Dover Samuels has said the leaving of the door open for Dyson to return to cabinet was a clear double standard, after he was relieved of his responsibilities and not given his portfolios back when he was cleared of charges against him. Miss Clark has said she does not approve of MPs drinking at work. Ms Dyson had a few wines while working late.

- DOONE REPORT: Critics have said the Peter Doone report on Maori crime is an expensive way of telling us what we already know. It has been described as a disguised golden handshake – the former Police Commissioner stood down after a late night driving incident.

- BODY FOUND: The body of the Hamilton man who went missing recently has been found in the Waikato river. Police say there are no suspicious circumstances.

- FIREWORKS: The Fire Service say parents should do more to supervise their children with firecrackers, after children threw smoke bombs through the window of an elderly woman’s house after she refused to Trick or Treat, amongst other incidents involving firecrackers last night.

- MATCH FIXING: Kiwi cricket great Martin Crowe has had his name drawn into an Indian report into match fixing, but he isn’t sure why. He said the news this morning stunned him. He denies any involvement in match fixing, but says he may have inadvertently spoken to bookies posing as journalists.
