Drowned Baby – Lisa Blaikie – Kiwi In Crash – Business Forum – Part Time Prison – Paralympics

- DROWNED BABY: The body of an 11-month-old baby was retrieved from a Wairarapa river today. Police have launched a homicide inquiry. The boy’s mother appeared in court on charges relating to the boy’s death and is in custody in a psychiatric hospital. It is believed the baby was thrown into the water. The police attention has now switched to the baby’s family in Wellington. The baby’s father was overseas on business but returned home upon hearing the news.

- LISA BLAIKIE: Christchurch police are now almost certain two pieces of luggage retrieved from a water race belonged to murdered Timaru hitchiker Lisa Blaikie. Forensic examinations have not yet been undertaken on the luggage, which is being dried out.

- KIWI IN CRASH: A New Zealand pilot, 37 year old Robert Alcorn, has been confirmed as one of four people killed in a train crash north of London. A fault in the track is being investigated as the cause of the track, after initial fears of terrorism were ruled out.

- BUSINESS FORUM: The Government’s agenda for next week’s business forum is out, but not officially. The National Party leaked the agenda to One News. National claim a disgruntled Labour Minister leaked the agenda to the National Party, but this is denied by Labour. The conference theme is “moving towards a knowledge economy.” Critics have said dissenters against the Government have not been invited. 85 business leaders are expected to attend.

- PART TIME PRISON: There is qualified support in the government for Corrections Minister Matt Robson’s scheme for some criminals to go to jail part time – just nights and weekends.

- PARALYMPICS: New Zealand is on the medal table at the Sydney Paralympics on the first day of competition, with a silver medal in the 1km cycling time trial.
