YUGOSLAVIA: Yugoslavian President Slobodan Milosevic has lost the election in Yugoslavia but with less than an outright
majority declared for his opponent elections are headed for a second round. The result from the election has been
declared at 48% for Kostunica and 40% for Milosevic.
S26: More than 9000 protestors have besieged the IMF and World Bank meetings in Prague. Many of the delegates at
meetings in Prague also want reform. Even the World Bank
OLYMPICS: Marion Jones will resume her chase for five Olympic medals today on the last day of the track and field
competition. CJ Hunter, Jones husband, says the only distraction that will affect his wife is badgering by the media.
OLYMPICS: NZ’s athletes are busy today. Beatrice Faumuina has qualifed for the discus finals which will be held today.
Toni Hodgkinson is going to have a shot at the 1500m. Chantel Brunner is no longer injured.
PETROL PRICES: Oil Companies say that yesterday’s fall in petrol prices does not mean that NZ prices are now on a
downward curve.
EAST TIMOR: An investigation is underway into an exchange of gunfire between NZ forces and a militia group in East
Timor.
CONSUMER CONFIDENCE: Consumer confidence has dipped into the negative for the first time in two years. Adrian Orr says
that exporting areas remain positive but the worries of Aucklanders drag the index down.
TRAMPERS: Bad weather is continuing to hamper the rescue of three trampers trapped in the Kaimanawa ranges.
TAINUI: The Tainui faction trying to regain control of the tribe will return to court today in a move that could affect
the sale of the Auckland Warriors rugby league club.
SHACKLETON BOOK: A first edition of South by Ernest Shackleton with two personal letters from the explorer is being
auctioned today by Bethune’s books.
