NZERS AT THE OLYMPICS: A medal at last. Clint Brown reporting. It has been an all black start to the Olympics for the NZ Team. But now we have won a medal. Fans queue anticipating seeing NZ get its first medal. Mark Todd was riding for the last time at the games. Todd was a bit slow around the course but got a clear round. SUPER FRIDAY: A transportation test for Sydney on Super Friday as 500,000 head for Homebush and the opening of athletic events. Spectators were warned to leave before dawn to get to the Park. No-one was complaining about the commuter crush but. More than 150,000 went through Sydney’s central station today. Eight to 12 trains were leaving for the games every hour during the day. ANOTHER MEDICAL INQUIRY: Another medical inquiry has been ordered by the government into how agencies dealt with complaints about Northland gynaecologist Graham Parry. The husband Colleen Poutsma, a patient who is dying, says he is pleased something is being done. Mrs Poutsma is determined to make it to her medical disciplinary hearing where she expects to receive an apology from Dr Parry.

SPARROW DISEASE: The sparrow population in the South Island is being decimated by a disease which is thought to be salmonella. Christchurch health authorities say children have also been getting the illness. One farmer picks up 50 sparrows that died over two days in his granary. Willowbank park is concerned other birds might catch the illness.

BILL GATES WEALTH: Forbes Magazine has named Bill Gates as the richest man in the world worth NZD$155 billion.

NET FRAUD: A 14-year-old boy accused of securities fraud and making hundreds of thousands of dollars on the internet has been let off after paying a fine. Jonathan Lebed has now settled out of court with the SEC. The boy has paid $285,000 in fines on 11 trades and been let off on 16 other trades on which he is thought to have made more. The boy made money by buying obscure stocks and then sending messages to other net stock-traders saying the stock would rise in price. This, the SEC says, made the stock prices rise, at which time the boy then sold.
