Ghostly Flight – Turia Apology – Child Abuse – Palmerston North Murders – Rest-Home Death – Sydney Olympics

- GHOSTLY FLIGHT: Eight have died after plane ride across Australia. One of the dead is confirmed to be a New Zealander. The plane flew for hours in a straight line on auto pilot, after cabin pressure was lost, depriving the passengers and pilot of oxygen. They would have flown for miles unconcious, before the plane ran out of fuel. An oxygen warning light and drop down oxygen masks, which may have saved their lives, appear not to have worked.

- TURIA APOLOGY: Tariana Turia made an unreserved apology for her comments comparing colonisation to the WWII holocaust. She apologised for any offence her speech may have caused, but it hasn’t stopped her using the H word, getting her into more trouble. In questioning before her apology, she agreed with a Waitiangi tribunal report on Taranaki land wars, which used the word holocaust. National said she deliberately went against Helen Clark’s telling her to never use the word. Mrs Turia said she never meant to excuse child abuse.

- CHILD ABUSE: A mother accused of beating and starving her son claims she thought he was possessed by the devil. She said she prayed for her boy to help rid him of evil. She denied hitting him with a closed fist or throwing him against anything. Deposition hearings have been adjourned till November.

- PALMERSTON NORTH MURDERS: Police say the bodies of the Palmerston North murder victims haven’t been released to relatives – the police still need them for their Investigations.

- REST-HOME DEATH: Police are investigating the suspicious death of a woman in her 90’s in a Christchurch rest-home.

- SYDNEY OLYMPICS: The Head of the International Olympic Committee has arrived in Sydney to oversee the start of the games. A Sydney newspaper has caused controversy with the publication of a picture of a homeless man living underneath an Olympics advertisement. It has since been revealed that the photographer paid the man to move his makeshift dwelling underneath the sign, and the Paper has apologised.
