PM Fears For Safety – Turia Apology – Samuels Affair – East Timor – Child Abuse – ACC Olympics Relay
- PM FEARS FOR SAFETY: Prime Minister Helen Clark says she fears for her safety at home, blaming what she said is the reckless publication of a map and photograph of her house in yesterday’s Sunday Star Times. She says she has had to upgrade security at her Auckland home. The opposition say she’s just trying to divert attention from the real issues – Miss Clark made a submission opposing a project creating a new boarding home in her neighbourhood. The Sunday Star editor says she is standing by the story.
Miss Clark’s submission was written on paper with the Parliament letterhead, prompting suggestions she was trying to use her position of power to add undue weight to her submission. Miss Clark said her secretary wrote the letter, which should never have been printed on parliamentary paper.
- TURIA APOLOGY: Tariana Turia is to say sorry for her holocaust speech. She will make an official apology in parliament tomorrow. Some say she should be sacked for her comments. She’s been told never to use the word holocaust again. Mrs Turia received a severe reprimand from the Prime Minister, and has had two Ministers appointed to keep a close eye on her.
- SAMUELS AFFAIR: Dover Samuels has been cleared of the final allegation against him – that he had a sexual relationship with someone in his care.
- EAST TIMOR: The Government has decided New Zealand Soldiers will stay longer in East Timor and will be paId more, following talk that soldiers were unhappy with their pay and were talking about moving to the Australian Army. 600 soldiers will make up the third group of soldiers, and will remain in East Timor until May.
- CHILD ABUSE: Another child abuse case has emerged. A mother is accused of causing grievous bodily harm to her son and starving him. He had fractures and was severely malnourished. The baby also had severe brain injuries, typically seen when a baby is shaken.
- ACC: Critics have said a new ACC reporting system may discourage parents from taking their children to the doctor. Now if child goes to a doctor for injuries more than 10 times, information will be passed on to Child and Family services. ACC says the subject is topical and has prompted them to act. Other government agencies may follow ACC with similar rules.

RELAY: It is 11 days till the Olympics, and the torch relay
is on home stretch. Torch has hit Sydney streets. It will go
as far south as Canberra before turning around for Sydney
again.
