TARIANA TURIA: Associate Maori Affairs Minister Tariana Turia has infuriated politicians and Jews with comments on Post
Colonial Traumatic Stress Disorder and the Holocaust. Maori Affairs Minister Parekura Horomia says he will have ongoing
discussions with Turia on her views. Extract from Tariana Turia’s speech comparing colonisation with the Holocaust.
Another extract concerning PSTSD. Irihapeti Ramsden says that PSTSD does exist and places the actions of Maori offenders
in context without excusing them. The Opposition is appalled and says that Turia should be sacked. “This is seriously
damaging race relations in NZ,” says Jenny Shipley. Winston Peters is also appalled. Helen Clark is at present on
holiday and was not commenting.
AUCKLAND STABBING: A second stabbing in Mangere East today. The description of the second attacker is similar. Today the
daughter of the murdered Mangere shop-keeper made a plea to find her father’s killer. “It’s hard to think he is not
going to come back”. The victim in today’s stabbing described his assailant as similar to the murderer. The murdered
shop-keeper had just $150 when he was robbed.
MORE MURDER: Four more homicide inquiries are underway. In Palmerston North a mother and daughter were found murdered in
their house. They were found at 9.30am this morning. Already this week there have been five people murdered around the
country. One in Christchurch – Robert Peter Harman – was beaten almost beyond recognition with a blunt instrument. A
woman in Taumaranui has also been murdered.
UNDERGROUND FIRE: Methane Gas from a landfill is being held responsible for an underground fire in Wellington. A school
was evacuated and firemen doused the hot ground with water till it started to cool down.
MOSCOW FIRE: Today a third body was pulled from a lift shaft in Moscow. Russian authorities say the Television tower
will be repaired.
ROAD RAGE: The victim of a road-rage attack in Auckland on Sunday – Jim Eliot - remained in serious condition in
Auckland Hospital.
GUNMAN: Residents of a Wainuiomata were told to stay indoors today after police tracked a gunman. The gunman was caught
after he crashed his car.
LESBIAN BURGER CONTROVERSY: A lesbian couple asked to leave a Burger-king restaurant for kissing in a queue are in
dispute with Burger King after being asked to leave the restaurant for kissing for a second time. Burger King is
defending its security staff’s actions, but is apologising. The couple say they will take the matter to the Human Rights
Commission.
