Fiji Coup: Pilots Freed, Inward Bound – GE Food Labeling - Concorde – Cancer Inquiry – Masterton Toddler Death – Auckland Robbery – Attempted Robbery
FIJI COUP - PILOTS FREED: Two Kiwi pilots taken hostage yesterday were freed today. Morris Parsons and James Henry are well an unharmed. Parsons wanted to fly back to where he was taken hostage today. Parsons says he was treated well at a village where he was held over-night. Elsewhere in Fiji Indo-Fijian hostages were also freed – but there are concerns for their safety. Meanwhile a new Fijian government has been sworn in and Fiji is hoping that there will be no more violence.
FIJI COUP – INWARD BOUND: Kiwi passengers departing at Auckland airport for Fiji. Air Pacific says they are not canceling any flights. Air New Zealand today ordered three flights to overfly Fiji and not take a transit stop. The PM has repeated her warnings to NZers not to go to Fiji. The tourist industry is hoping for a return to peace.
GE FOOD LABELLING: Australian and NZ Health Ministers today agreed to label all food with GE ingredients. The Green Lobby however says it is a betrayal. Annette King says it is a victory for common sense. She says some people will not be happy but consumers will be well served. Green MP Sue Kedgley says that the regime will be confusing and unhelpful. The new regime will take 12 months to put in place.
CONCORDE: New evidence shows the fate of the flight was already sealed before it left the run-way. A photo shows the plane was on-fire on the runway. Investigators revealed tyre debris found on the runway that may have exploded on the runway.
CANCER INQUIRY: Sandra Coney slams inaction from the Health Ministry on cervical cancer. She says that sensible decisions hardly ever get made by the Ministry of Health.
MASTERTON TODDLER DEATH: The 23-year-old Wairarapa girl murdered at the weekend was buried today. Police have identified 72 people who came into contact with Hine in her final four days alive. Police have seized four family vehicles. Pathologists have pin-pointed the time she was killed as either Saturday or Sunday. They also believe that she was dead for five hours before she was delivered to hospital.
AUCKLAND ROBBERY: $300,000 was stolen from a van en-route to filling up ATM machines.
ATTEMPTED ROBBERY: A man with a knife tried to bluff his way out of a robbery on Wednesday night. The offender threatened an attendant with a knife. He then tied him up out back before locking himself out of the store room. He attempted to serve several people briefly – after removing his balaclava - then panicked and ran away empty handed.
