MIDDLE EAST PEACE: The Middle East Peace Conference at the United States appears to be hanging by a thread, with both the Israelis and the Palestinians threatening to leave. However, US President Bill Clinton is urging both parties to stay and reconcile their differences over Jerusalem’s sovereignty.

- MURDERER SIGHTED: Police say they are investigating a sighting of notorious convicted murderer of Ronald Jorgenson earlier this year, 14 years after a staged car-crash after which he disappeared.

- CHAUDHRY GOVT. MEETS: About 25 members of Fijians deposed coalition government are meeting to discuss options on how to join a new Fijian government.

- FIJI COMMISSIONER SUMMONED: Fiji’s High Commissioner has arrived at the beehive for a meeting with Foreign Affairs Minister Phil Goff where Mr Goff is expected to voice his disapproval over recent events in the country.

- KOREAN MISSILES: The Russian President Vladimir Putin says the North Korean was prepared to scrap its nuclear missile programme in return for foreign aid.

- CERVICAL INQUIRY: The Australian pathologist responsible for rereading 1000s of cervical smear tests says isolated pathologists must ensure they work up to an international quality standards.

- TREATY PRINCIPLES: The Government has announced a set of six principles they will use for settling Treaty claims, Attorney General Margaret Wilson said today.

- SCHOOLS BLACKLISTED: The Secondary Schools Principal Association says a website which blacklists schools because of their use of the new national qualification is not helpful and overly simplistic.

- YOUTH OFFENDING: The Minister of Corrections Matt Robson says the prison role with increase 40 per cent in the next 10 years if something is not done to prevent youth re-offending.

- DIRT IS GOOD: Some dirt is good, the message from an American geneticist who says that obsessive cleanliness can lead to a weakening of the immune response - and possibly cause the spread of antibiotic resistant super-bugs.

- CATTLE RUSTLERS: Farmers are angry the Government is not increasing the penalties for stock theft which they say do not reflect the seriousness of the crime.
