TAMIHERE RULES HIMSELF OUT: Labour MP John Tamihere has put his party ahead of personal ambition, saying he will pull out of the race to be the new Maori Affairs Minister. A one-and-a-half-hour meeting with the Prime Minister led to this decision.
- CONFIDENCE IN CLARK: Meanwhile, Helen Clark said the matter came down to confidence in her leadership, saying she would resign if the Labour caucus did not endorse her choice of Parekura Horomia.
- FIJI SANCTIONS DISCUSSED: Cabinet also discussed sanctions against Fiji tonight extending the banned list of coup supporters of three hundred. However it has not yet decided on the level of economic sanctions.
- FIJI JAILED STORMED: Within the last half-hour a rescue force has stormed the maximum security jail, after a revolt in the complex when the prisoners took their prison guards hostage. There is reported to be considerable bloodshed at the prisons.
- INFLATION RISES: Inflation is on the up with the latest figures shown prices have risen by 25 per cent in the past year.
- FOOD POISONING STATS: A medical study found that over 100,000 New Zealanders sick from food poisoning are costing the country of $50 million a year in lost earnings.
- REPTILE PARK BURNS: An electrical fault is believed to have started a blaze in an Australian reptile park which killed hundreds of rare reptiles including two New Zealand tuatara.
- LUNA LIGHT SHOW: New Zealanders viewed a spectacular luna light-show last night, in a lunar eclipse which scientists say is the longest we will see for 1,000 years.
