GISBORNE CANCER SCARE NO. 2: THE PROSTATE SCARE: There is a new scare in Gisborne after it has been revealed that there
are 465 cases of prostate cancer. 111 will have to be retested after a technician mixed the wrong chemicals in the
testing process against advice.
- KING SACKS GISBOURNE HEALTH BOARD: Health Minister Annette King has sacked the Gisborne Tai Rawhiti Health Board,
after the blunders came to light today, she says not everyone on the Health Board is to blame for the botchup but all
members must take full responsibility for it. She has appointed Northland’s Health board head Malcolm Brown as an
interim head for the board.
- CERVICAL CANCER INQUIRY CONTINUES: Meanwhile, the inquiry into the other main scare in Gisborne continues today, with
the Medical Council admitting that self-regulation can fail in detecting misdiagnosis for cervical cancer.
- NINE HOSTAGES RELEASED IN FIJI: Nine hostages were released from the Parliamentary complex in Suva early this morning
after 55 days of being held. The first sign of the release came in the dead of night, although the release did not go
initially as planned. The release was presented by the military as a “good will” move from George Speight’s camp. The
military has given in to all George Speights demands for a new government to be elected on Monday.
- FIJI CIVIL DISRUPTIONS CONTINUE: Civil disruptions have spread in Fiji with an airport and a tourist island occupied
by landowners angry at the low rents they were being paid by their tenants.
