FIJI COUP: George Speight and his supporters say Fiji is headed for civil war. 300 protesting landowners gathered around barracks and shut down a power station. Elsewhere troops have handed over a base to rebels.
JOHN TAMIHERE: Labour MP John Tamihere says everything there is to know about him is now in the public arena. Mr Tamihere has admitted to a court case involving forgery and three drunken driving convictions.
DOVER SAMUELS ON TAMIHERE: Dover Samuels says the latest allegations against Mr Tamihere says that Parliament has sunk to its lowest level. “At the end of the day it is quite sick”.
SOCCER WORLD CUP 2006: The NZ Soccer Administrator Charlie Dempsey was the single abstention that gave the right to Germany to hold the 2006 World Cup. Had Dempsey voted for South Africa then the casting vote would have been used and South Africa would probably have won. The announcement screened live in Pretoria was received in stunned silence. The disappointment is bitter.
SCHOOL ENROLMENTS: Parents who try to get around new school enrolment rules may have their child’s enrolments annulled. A Christchurch principal says that parents are starting to dob in parents who are planning to manipulate the system. The Minister of Education says he hopes people will follow the rules.
NORTHERN IRELAND: Authorities in Northern Ireland have banned a second parade after four nights of violence at Drumcree.
CANCER INQUIRY” A cervical cancer screening programme audit has been cancelled because of privacy problems contained in section 74(a) in the Health Act. The Gisborne Inquiry head has suggested that women waive their rights to privacy.
