SOLOMON’S COUP: The Solomon Island capital Honiara is reported to be calm this morning after an attempted coup yesterday. Armed men were reported to have taken the country’s Prime Minister hostage working with elements of the country’s police force. The Prime Minister was reported to have been allowed to attend a cabinet conference while under armed guard.
SOLOMONS FLIGHTS: Solomon Islands airlines has suspended all domestic and international flights to the country because no one is manning the navigations to the international airport. Meanwhile phone lines to the islands are still down.
FIJI EXPULSION: Foreign Minister Phil Goff says he expects the Ministerial Action Group within the Commonwealth to expell the Fiji from the organisation as the current government is not constitutional.
FIJI PRESSURE: With talks to resolve the hostage crisis deadlocking the Fijian army is putting more pressure on George Speight and his followers.
INDO EARTHQUAKE: The Indonesian Government is moving more food and medical supplies to Sumatra after a large earthquake in the province killed an estimated 60 people so far.
PINOCHET IMMUNITY: An Appeals Court in Chile has decided to strip the former dictator Augusto Pinochet of his immunity from prosecution in the country.
GREEN DEAL: The Alliance says delays in the signing of a formal protocol between the Government and the Green Party are due to its concerns with the behaviour of some of the Green members.
MURDER CHARGE: Five men have been jointly charged with murder after the death of a man following an assault in Auckland.
WINE SALES: Wine and beer sales in supermarkets are up says a survey after new Sunday trading laws allowed beer and wine in supermarkets.
