FIJIAN COUP ATTEMPT: The leader of the attempted coup in Fiji has allowed several journalists in the compound where he is holding the Fijian Prime Minister and members of his Cabinet hostage George Speight has said there is no threat to the Fijian Prime Minister’s life. He has admitted his coup attempt is illegal but says their was no other way to get native Fijian land claims on the political agenda.

TAUKEI MOVEMENT: The leader of the hardline Taukei movement in Fiji says many in the police and army support the illegal coup’s agenda. However the Taukei movement says it was not behind the coup but was aiming for it’s agenda in political life.

FIJI COUP REACTION: Meanwhile a policeman has said the police view the coup attempt as a criminal illegal act, while unions have called a national strike in support of the captured cabinet ministers.

DOCTOR PLEADS A Christchurch doctor and former deputy mayor Morgan Fahey has pleaded guilty against 13 charges of indecency against his patients.

TEAM NZ: The new head of Team New Zealand defence of the America’s Cup has said there are likely to be no more defections from the team since the departure of team tactician Brad Butterfield and skipper Russell Coutts.

LOVE BUG V2: A new version of the I Love You virus called “new love” has disrupted several large New Zealand businesses. The new virus virtually disables a computer after it is opened.

PETROL PRICES RISE: Shell has announced the second increase in the price of petrol in a week by 4 cents a litre a total of nine cents in the past fortnight.

TELECOM MOBILE: Telecom are planning to produce a service which will restrict telephone calls to mobiles in people’s homes after parents are confronted with bills of hundreds of dollars from teenagers.

NOVELIST DIES: Dame Barbara Cartland has died at 78, one of the world’s most prolific and successful literary careers in romance novels.
