Petrol Prices Rise - Train Driver Trial - Logging Safety - Mckinnon’s Zimbabwe Visit- Dunkirk Veterans Meet

PETROL PRICES RISE: The price of petrol is on the way up again with the major oil companies BP, Shell, Mobil and Caltex all announcing a price rise of 5 cents a litre. The increasing prices are blamed on higher international oil prices. The rise comes just a week after a rise in cigarettes and should hit the poor hard. Petrol retail company !Challenge has yet to decided whether it will follow the price rise.

TRAIN DRIVER TRIAL: The trial of a train driver who ran over a man killing him in a rail accident last year began today. The man has been charged with manslaughter by police. He is fighting the charges.

LOGGING SAFETY: The safety of logging trucks is also under scrutny tonight with the trial of a logging driver whose truck over turned also in court for dangerous driving. Just under 10 trucks overturn every year. Police say the driver of the truck is believed to have been traveling at over 100 kmph before the accident happened.

MCKINNON’S ZIMBABWE VISIT: Commonwealth Secretary General Don McKinnon has been snubbed by Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe in his visit to the troubled country. Mr McKinnon could not avoid an international media crush when he met today with Mr Mugabe’s Foreign Minister to discuss elections and the continuing violence by civil war veterans against white farmers. However a scheduled meeting with Mr Mugabe did not occur when Mr McKinnon’s motorcade was blocked by the Zimbabwe army. Robert Mugabe has announced national elections for the country in six weeks time.

DUNKIRK VETERANS MEET: Veterans of one of the most extraordinary operations in World War II met today in London for what they say is the last time. Met who fought in the battle of Dunkirk gathered in the National museum where there is an exhibit remembering the battle.
