MAORI-POLICE MEETING: The Government’s Maori MPs have told the Police Minister and police officials that lessons must be learned from the Waitara shooting. Maori affairs Minister Dover Samuels says the police gave the MPs a detailed briefing of the incident including confidential information.

RACE RELATIONS IN WAITARA: The Race Relations Conciliator Dr. Rajen Prasad is visiting the town of Waitara in a low key visit to see whether racial issues have played a part in the shooting.

WINZ REVIEW: A final report into the review of the WINZ has been released to the Government. The report is strongly critical of the management of the department although it does not point the finger directly at WINZ boss Christine Rankin.

MAN SENTENCED A 24-year-old man Ricky Manu has been sentenced to 7 years for manslaughter for a crashing a stolen car killing a woman in a police chase in Wanganui. He has been banned from driving for life.

SUPER 12 DOCTOR: The team doctor for the Chiefs Super 12 rugby team, Steve Reid, has been praised after providing medical assistance following a shooting at a South African Resort.

SIERRA LEONE: The United States defence department has told the United Nations says it is willing to fly 800 troops to Sierra Leone to free hundreds of UN peace keepers believed to be held hostage by a revolutionary millitary front attempting a takeover of the country.

RESERVE BANK REVIEW: The Finance Minister Michael Cullen says the Government’s review of the Reserve Bank monetary policy is not about blaming the bank for past mistakes, but instead is looking at how the bank can avoid future economic volatility.

AUSSIE GST: The Australian Treasurer is expected to bring Australian GST into this years budget statement announced tonight.

FINGERPRINT SYSTEM: A new $2.3 million police computer which will digitally record fingerprints and instantly match them was opened by Police Minister George Hawkins today.

MANUKAU SKILLS: The Mayor of Manukau City is working with Skill New Zealand in a forum to get young people training in the region.

HIT AND RUN: The police have asked the driver and the occupants of a maroon coloured car to make contact with them after a hit and run accident in Lyndisfarme outside of Christchurch. Their investigation follows the body of a man found earlier this week in a ditch in the area.
