POLICE KILLING: The Police Union says they are standing by a policeman who shot and killed unarmed man breaking windows in a Taranaki town.

TODDLER BEATEN: The depositions hearing has begun in a Waitakere Court in the case of a man who beat a 3 1/2 year-old to death.

PLANE CRASH: Emergency services are at the scene of a light plane crash near Kaitaia where one man has been killed.

PILOT TRIAL: A former Ansett Pilot charged with manslaughter made a brief appearance in the Palmerston District Court this morning. The pilot Gary Southeren was involved in the Dash Eight Crash which killed passengers last decade.

JAIL BREAK: Two men who broke out of Auckland’s Mt Eden Prison last week are still at large and police are warning the public to familiarize themselves with the men’s appearance. See this at www.aucklandcitypolice@ govt.nz.

COAST COMPENSATION: West Coast mayors will meet for the second time with Government ministers this afternoon to discuss a $100 million package offered to them

AMOEBIC MENINGITIS: A ten year old Waikato child is in hospital with a serious case of Amoebic Meningitis which is believed to have come from a hot pool visit.

FRAUD TRIAL POSTPONED: A major fraud trial of Lower Hutt women Anita Faisandier has been delayed because a juror is ill. The trial will resume again tomorrow.

BASE CAPTURED: Philippine troops have captured a base on an island off Malaysia near where radical Muslim guerrillas are holding tourists hostage.

CHRISTCHURCH FOG: Fog closed Christchurch Airport this morning and also put a hold a Parliamentary Inquiry over police behaviour involving protestors and the visit of the Chinese Premier.

SCHOOL SMOKING: The Association of School Boards says a total ban on smoking in schools could stop parents and other groups from being involved in school activities.

CAPSIZED LINER: Ship surveyors are en-route to the Envy World Discover liner which capsized after hitting a reef near the Solomon Islands. All the tourists have been evacuated to the Solomons.

TOUR OF DUTY: About 550 soldiers have parade near Burnham Military Camp before their tour of duty in East Timor which will start this week.

QUAKE DAMAGE: The Earthquake Commission says almost a million dollars worth of claims have been filed after a 5 point scale earthquake centred near Taranaki. Over 500 claims were made all from private properties.
