Fishing Tragedy - Rower Rescued - Matrimonial Property - Matrimonial Propertyx2 - Bouma Killer - Woman Sentenced - Cricket Umpiring

FISHING TRAGEDY: Survival and tragedy on a fishing trip, a teenager is plucked from the water alive a day after her, her father and two others went missing on a fishing trip. None of the other three survivors have yet been found and are believed to have slipped under the waves. The girl told the police the boat overturned early on Sunday morning. None of the other three were wearing lifejackets.

ROWER RESCUED: Another sea rescue took place today after a Frenchman who was trying to row across the Pacific Ocean to South America aborted the mission when he started suffering circulation problems.

MATRIMONIAL PROPERTY: Major changes are on the way to the Matrimonial Property Act which will affect both de-facto couples and same sex ones. The Government has now moved to give the same rights to de-facto couples who will have to divide up property equally after three years of living together. However National leader Jenny Shipley says by extending the existing laws the Government is ignoring the wishes of the traditional elements of the community who see marriage as sacrosanct. She prefers separate legislation covering de-facto and gay couples.

MATRIMONIAL PROPERTYx2: The Government claims New Zealand is one of the last Western democracies to recognise same-sex relationships. There are more than 200,000 couples who live in de-facto relationships, now versus over 2 million who say they are married.

BOUMA KILLER: The killer of Auckland woman Beverly Bouma is trying to get his sentence cut, saying he was charged under new home invasion legislation which did not exist before he committed his crime. His lawyers say the sentence violates international laws on sentencing. However the Government said the legislation was meant to be retrospective.

WOMAN SENTENCED: A woman has been sentence life imprisonment for her role in the shooting of a man outside a Christchurch boarding house. The woman supplied the gun that was used to kill the man.

CRICKET UMPIRING: There is a fresh call for more technology to be used to ensure better umpiring in cricket after recent mistakes by cricket umpires in both national and international matches.
