Greens Flex Muscle Over Party Hopping Bill

It appears Green concern over the coalition’s anti-party hopping legislation will see the bill delayed until 2000.

The Greens have told the government that they will not support an urgency motion in the House next week if the party-hopping bill is lumped in with legislation to increase top tax rates and repeal ACC reforms.

The Greens would support the urgency motion if the party hopping bill was deferred.

It is likely NZ First would support the urgency motion, however it looks as though the part-hopping legislation will instead be deferred so the new government does not appear to be immediately relying on NZ First.

The Greens say they campaigned on opposing the proposed legislation, saying it essentially made political parties sovereign and was undemocratic.
