Fire Fight In East Timor - Two Killed Two Injured

The Australian Army is remaining tight-lipped about two soldiers injured in an East Timor militia ambush late yesterday.

The two are recovering in Interfet's makeshift military hospital in the capital Dili. The soldiers were wounded as militia fighters with automatic weapons ambushed them west of the town of Suai late yesterday.

Two militiamen died as the Australian, British and New Zealand forces caught in the ambush counter-attacked.

The multinational force insists both injured soldiers wil make a full recovery, but is taking a hard line on their identification.

An official told newsmedia this morning no names would be released or pictures of the injured, not even pictures of force commander Major General Peter Cosgrove visiting the injured.

The spokeman declined to say whether the Army was protecting the injured to assist with their recovery, or for security reasons.
