PM's Post-Cabinet Press Conference 17/12/18: New Chief Justice, Bovis Update
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's final post-cabinet press conference of the year focussed on announcing the appointment of Helen Winkelmann as the next Chief Justice, and an update on effort to eradicate Mycoplasma bovis from New Zealand. The Prime Minister was joined by Minister for Biosecurity Damien O'Connor, Chair of Dairy NZ Jim Van der Poel, and Chair of Beef and Lamb NZ Andrew Morrison to discuss information from the M bovis Technical Advisory Group, the ongoing testing and compensation programmes, and the NAIT tracking programme.
Other topics included an arrest for human trafficking and slavery in the horticulture industry, Foreign Minister Winston Peters' recent 'Pacific Reset' policy and NZ's position on China and the Pacific, the UN Compact on Migration, a petition for a sentencing appeal in a hit and run case and victims' rights in the court system, Australia's decision to recognize West Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and problems and delays after low response rate for the online-led 2018 census.
