Acting PM's Press Conference: Twitter Than Thou
At today's post-cabinet press conference Acting Prime Minister Winston Peters announced the introduction of legislation to amend the Reserve Bank Act. It will require consideration of employment as well as inflation when setting the base interest rate. The rate will also be set by a committee rather than the Reserve Bank Governor alone.
Peters also announced that Dr Pauline Kingi will lead the inquiry into the process that led to the appointment of Wally Haumaha as Deputy Commissioner of Police, and noted upcoming engagements with visiting delegations from French Polynesia and Japan.
Questions covered these matters as well as negotiation over public access to land purchased by US TV presenter Matt Lauer, overseas land sales generally, Australian airlines' add campaigns about beef, a letter from Nauru asylum seekers that Peters said the government had not received even though it was emailed, the government's decision to 'proceed with caution' by keeping to their budget responsibility rules, various reasons Peters shouldn't have opinions about the President of the United States' Twitter account threatening war in all capital letters, Iran blockade threats, Australia's deportation and asylum policies, the possibility of selling crown land to pay for infrastructure, and illicit tobacco sales (as well as other issues with tobacco excise which the government does not plan to fix soon).
