Scoop’s Opening the Election campaign announces the ‘Ads for Good’ winners
Scoop today announces the results of our ads for good. There are six campaigns that have been voted winners of our Ads for Good based on votes received by Scoop’s supporters from our Opening the Election fundraising.
Ads for Good is one of the first parts of Scoop’s Opening the Election initiative. We are pleased to announce these six big winners whose campaigns will be able to build their profile through Scoop in the lead up to the election.
In total there were 15 entrants and the final votes cast resulted in 6 leading campaigns as follows:
Rank Campaign / Organisation
1st Basic Income New Zealand / Basic income NZ - awarded 600,000 Ads for Good.
For a basic income to ensure every New Zealander has the income they need to live in safety and to lead a prosperous life.
2nd Double The Quota / Doing our bit - awarded 300,000 Ads for Good.
Doing Our Bit started the campaign to double NZs refugee quota to 1500 places and the associated funding. We're challenging the country to make that happen at this election, after having achieved a small, scheduled increase to the quota last year - the first time it has grown since 1987.
3rd equal Eat My Lunch / Eat my lunch - awarded 225,000 Ads for Good.
We are a social enterprise business tackling child poverty through school lunches.
3rd equal Lifeline / Lifeline - awarded
225,000 Ads for Good.
Lifeline exists to prevent suicide in New Zealand by providing support to people in crisis. The Lifeline 24/7 helpline responds to calls from individuals dealing with a range of issues causing them distress. Sadly, New Zealand’s suicide rate is increasing and last year 579 people took their own lives. This is the highest ever recorded. We know that seeking help from professionals when in distress can prevent suicide and we want to make more people aware of our services and promote help seeking behaviour.
5th Stop the Sanctions / Auckland
Action Against Poverty - awarded 150,000 Ads for Good.
We are calling on Government to Stop the Sanctions on sole mothers and their children by removing sections 176,177 and 178 from the Social Security Legislation Rewrite Bill (currently section 70A). This sanction forces sole mother to pay $22-$28 per child, per week if that child's father is not named on the birth certificate. This sanction places families who are already struggling into further economic hardship. Currently there are approximately 17,000 children in Aotearoa New Zealand for which this sanction is imposed. Of the 13,616 parents, 13,298 are women, and only 318 are men. 52.8% are Māori. This policy severely disproportionately affects women and Māori.
6th The Kiwi Bottle Drive / New Zealand Product Stewardship Council - awarded 100,000 Ads for Good.
The New Zealand Product Stewardship Council is launching "The Kiwi Bottle Drive", to re-introduce a Cash for Containers scheme (aka a bottle deposit scheme) that will reduce litter by 65%, keep plastic out of the oceans, create around 2,700 jobs and provide cash for our kids and communities.
Every year in New Zealand, we waste the equivalent of 700 Jumbo Jets full of beverage containers, causing irreparable damage to ecosystems and squandering natural resources. A Cash for Containers scheme is common cents. Why don't we have it already!
