7.5 7.8 Quake Near Hanmer Springs - 100s of Aftershocks – 2 Dead – Tsunamis – Widespread Damage

A massive quake, magnitude 7.5 struck shortly before midnight near Hamner in the South Island. The quake has caused significant damage as far away as Wellington.

Tsunami warnings were issued for the entire east coast of NZ – including Wellington and the Chatham Islands. Tsunami activity was observed in Wellington's Lyall Bay, and in Lyttelton Habour.
