PM's Press Conference 10/17/16: The war against meth

Prime Minister John Key began today's press conference by discussing the fight against methamphetamines, his upcoming delegation to India, next week’s visit from Fiji’s Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama, and a brief mention of the Outer Space and High Altitude Activities Bill.

Questions focused on New Zealand’s meth issues: if we are losing “the war on P”; on security around drug trafficking, specifically in Northland; support for users vs policing; and how gangs are policing themselves. Mr Key believes that the data doesn’t support the problem becoming worse and that a report will come out in about a month’s time.

Other topics expanded on the anticipated visit from the Fijian Prime Minister and Fiji civil rights issues, refugee resettlement from Nauru, Mr Key’s trip to India and the Indian students’ visa fraud, the new immigration policy and a firm "no" from the PM on a plastic bag tax.
