PM's Presser Conference 9/5/16: PanamaramaVideo, audio, and report by Lyndon Hood
Prime Minister John Key began today's post-cabinet press conference with an extended defence of New Zealand's tax system, foreign trust regime, and international financial disclosure. He was obliged to continue this through the majority of the questions that followed.
The Prime Minister was responding to details released in the last few days regarding New Zealand's role and portrayal in the leaked 'Panama Papers'. He cited positive OECD assessments, recent and upcoming legislative improvements, the planned review of disclosure rules, a new IRD task force, New Zealand's prominent participation in international tax working groups, and his lack of responsibility for what Pacific countries did.
Other matters discussed were a possible US naval visit for the NZ Navy's anniversary and the pending appointment or a new High Commissioner to London.
