Labour’s Sio – New Zealand must act now on climate change

Labour Party MP Su’a William Sio has told a climate change conference that the public needs to start thinking about "the end of the fossil fuel world".

Sio delivered an impromptu address at yesterday’s open forum discussion to conclude the ‘In the Eye of the Storm’ Pacific climate change conference.

Sio pledged to take action in Parliament against global warming, and said he hoped the government would itself do more, beginning with an evaluation of “economic-environmental activities”. New Zealand needed a model for an environmentally and economically sustainable society to “get people thinking about the end of the fossil fuel world”.

He also called for a worldwide recognition of “our universal responsibility to one another”, adding: “The activities of one countries does have an impact on other countries.” The voices of the deeply affected Pacific Island people should also be given consideration in Parliament on environmental.

Sio praised the conference for helping raise public awareness of climate change, and said he hoped Victoria and other universities would organise similar events in future.
