1. A leaked
document shows the Government plans an overhaul to the
governance of District Health Boards. The proposal would
remove the control of DHBs from elected representatives. At
present most DHBs have 11 members, seven elected at local
government elections and four appointed by the Minister of
Health. The proposed changes include reducing the number of
board members to nine - six of which would be appointed by
the Minister. The remaining three members would be drawn
from a new community advisory board, but would only spend
six month terms on the actual DHB board.
2. Police looking for two missing Canadian trampers in Fiordland National Park have found the body of one man, in what has been described as a field of avalanche debris. The pair hadn’t been seen for nearly three weeks.
3. Business New Zealand is welcoming government reforms to entice migrants to live in the regions but says measures are needed to ensure they stay there. From November, skilled migrants with a job offer outside of Auckland will get higher bonus points when applying for residency.
4. The Medical Council is defending its vetting criteria after a man accused of using someone else's papers worked as a psychiatrist in the Waikato. A man appeared in court on Saturday charged with fraud, after a senior psychiatrist became worried about his professional ability.
5. The Department of Corrections takes over the running of Mount Eden Prison from Serco today, but the union representing prison officers says it is more about saving face, than stepping in. Corrections is managing the facility for the next three months, while a string of allegations including a fight club, contraband, prisoner injuries and the death of one inmate under the watch of the private operator, is investigated.
