1. About 70 homes in South and West Auckland were flooded in a sudden torrential downpour last night. The worst of the flooding was in and around Papakura where water rose about half a metre in some homes. Some parts of Auckland received half the rainfall for July in just a few hours.

2. Global Dairy Prices have taken another battering at the latest international auction overnight and an analyst is describing the result as disastrous. Prices fell by more than 10%, the largest fall in the past year. Dairy analyst Susan Kilsby says farm debt levels will rise and rural communities will suffer as farmers reduce their spending to the bare minimum.

3. Anti-austerity protestors have clashed with police outside the Greek parliament building in Athens where MPs are preparing to vote on a package of sweeping reforms. The reforms must be passed as part of the bailout deal with Greece’s international creditors. There have also been angry exchanges in the Greek parliament.

4. Character Coalition spokesperson Sally Hughes says Auckland is at risk of losing its history after an independent hearings panel has said it is not convinced special character houses necessarily qualify for heritage status and protection.

5. The Labour Party’s housing spokesperson Phil Twyford insists he does not know who leaked real estate data he made public came from. Barfoot & Thompson fired someone yesterday who they say released the information.
