So Laid Back Country China Album Release

So Laid Back Country China Album Release – Photos and Interview

Story and Images by Francis Cook

On Friday night, So Laid Back Country China held a gig at Meow for the release of their new album With Knees of Honey in Goodbye Canyon. I briefly spoke with Harriet (lead vocals, keyboard) and Michael (lead vocals, guitar) before the gig.

Harriet and Michael are both reserved, private people and I asked if doing a full album release made them nervous “The original idea was to do an EP,” Michael said, “but the sound engineer talked us into doing a full album after he heard some of the tracks.” They admit their music is self-deprecating and personal – they did, after all, release one of their EPs exclusively on cassette.

“We had a push after people heard our songs,” Harriet said, “people were telling us we need to take ourselves more seriously.” Sound engineer James Goldsmith got his way, and they recorded a full album, in studio instead of live as they had previously done.

While their previous EPs could be classed as post-rock, Harriet and Michael said they have diversified their sound and there is a stronger folk side to the new album.

Their latest music video featuring grinding, vomiting, pashing, and general debauchery is now on YouTube. “We got the disgusting down,” Harriet said.

The album is available here.
