Following his statement to Parliament on plans to deploy New Zealand troops to Iraq, the Prime Minister was joined by Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant General Tim Keating and Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee at a press conference.
Lieutenant General Keating gave a presentation on the deployment which will see 103 New Zealand troops on a training mission at the Taji Military Complex with additional support staff around Iraq. He and the Prime Minister then took media questions. The CDF declined to indicate what proportion of the troops would be designated for force protection.
Before he was required to return to Parliament the Prime Minister offered his opinion on what the leader of the opposition actually thinks about sending troops to Iraq.
