Final Post-Cabinet Press Conference for 2014

Final Post-Cabinet Press Conference for 2014

Prime Minister John Key held his final post-cabinet press conference for 2014 today to discuss the foreign fighters legislation, the arrest of Antony de Malmanche in Bali and the possibility of an extradition treaty with China.

John Key confirmed that the foreign fighters bill will continue through parliament under urgency on Tuesday, and hopes the legislation will be passed by the end of the year.

Key was questioned briefly about Antony de Malmanche, a New Zealander arrested in Bali last week for possession of Methanphetamine.

Key said that NZ does not support the death penalty but could not confirm whether the NZ government would intervene if Malmanche face the death penalty.

Following the visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to NZ last week, questions to Key centred on a possible extradition treaty with China.

Key said he was reluctant to sign an extradition treaty with China because they have the death penalty, and it would not be in NZ’s humanitarian interests to deport people for execution.
