The House sits at 10.30am on Tuesday before MPs are summoned to hear the Speech from the Throne in the Legislative Council Chamber.

The speech delivered by the Governor-General on the Government’s behalf outlines its priorities for this Parliament.

After this MPs will return to the House for the presentation of petitions and papers and the introduction of any bills.

The Government has five notices of motion on the Order Paper which can be debated. These relate to relating to the appointment of the Deputy Speaker, Assistant Speakers, the reinstatement of business in a carryover motion and one on “Entities to be deemed public organisations”. More>>

The formal Commission Opening of the 51st Parliament will begin at 11am today.

The Governor-General will send three Royal Commissioners to declare the new Parliament open – the Chief Justice, the Court of Appeal President, and the Chief High Court Judge.

After the Commissioners leave the Chamber the swearing in of MPs will begin in alphabetical order. More>>

Labour’s New Zealand Council has appointed Bryan Gould as Convenor of its post-General Election Review. He will be joined on the Review Team by Hon Margaret Wilson, Stacey Morrison and Brian Corban.

The Review Team will be responsible for the production of three reports – one on the 2014 General Election campaign, the second on the longer-term perspective, and the final one on the governance and operations implications for the Party. More>>

With the election won, it’s time to find jobs for the boy. David Seymour is the Act Party’s latest scrounger to be rewarded by the National Party, and not only with a seat in Parliament. This time around, a couple of parliamentary Undersecretary posts in education and regulatory reform have been thrown in, plus an annual salary of $175,000 while he learns the ropes. Shouldn’t Seymour at least be put on a 90 day trial before he gets his hands on that sort of serious moolah?

It would be for his own good, really. At this rate, Act is never going to learn how to make its own way in the world More>>

National Party Leader John Key today announced a third consecutive confidence and supply agreement has been negotiated with the United Future Party...

The agreement provides Mr Dunne will be appointed Minister of Internal Affairs, Associate Minister of Health and Associate Minister of Conservation. He will be a Minister outside Cabinet. More>>

David Cunliffe has resigned as Labour Leader, but says he will seek re-election.

This will trigger a potentially bloody contest for the leadership. It is expected that former deputy leader Grant Robertson will seek to become Labour Leader, though others may throw their hat in the ring. If there is any contest the election will have to go through a process involving the party membership and union affiliates.

This follows Labour receiving 24% of the party vote in the election last week. The party’s worst result under the MMP system. More>>

David Cunliffe met with the press today after Saturday’s disappointing election result for The Labour Party.

“We are all deeply concerned by the result of our party vote. I want to be clear that I, as leader, am responsible for that result” Cunliffe said. Although he called the results “deeply disappointing” Cunliffe said “the voters are always right”.

He felt that Labour needed to make improvements and take action: “We don’t need months to get feedback from members of the public, we've had a lot over the past 48 hours”. More>>

Update: After a seven hour caucus meeting David Cunliffe has announced Chris Hipkins and Carmel Sepuloni as new party whips and said the Labour council will hold an independent review into the election result. He did not comment on any leadership vote.

With all votes counted National and John Key have won a third term and are close to being able to govern alone if they so choose.

Key has indicated he will still reach out to form a Government with ACT, United Future and Maori Party.
