Cloud is booming, spending up 20 percent

At GigaOm Barb Darrow reports .

The story quotes researcher IHS Technology which says spending on cloud infrastructure and services will climb 20 percent in 2014 to US$174 billion. By 2017 spending will reach $235 billion - that's three times the amount spent in 2011.

Which explains why IT giants like HP, IBM and Microsoft are rushing headlong to win a slice of the business. Local firms like Datacom and Revera - now part of Gen-i - climbed aboard the cloud train years ago.

All of them have a long way to go to catch up with Amazon Web Services which got there first and is still five times bigger than the next 14 cloud service providers combined.

One day we'll look back on these times just as we can now look back on the early days of the world wide web. We'll wonder how we ever managed to get things done before cloud computing and why there was ever any resistance.
