The Prime Minister met with reporters today to discuss his emeting in Australia with Tony Abbott, and details around individual New Zealanders fighting in the Syrian War.

Key was asked what sort of action would be taken against the Japanese whaling fleet in New Zealand waters. Although MFAT has been in touch with the Japanese ambassador, it is unclear as of yet whether he will be summoned to the Beehive. The New Zealand government is hoping to take a diplomatic route with Japan, rather than implementing sanctions.

Reporters asked Key at length about the involvement of individual New Zealanders in fighting in Syria. Fewer than ten individuals have had their passports revoked by the government under the 2005 Passports Amendment Act, owing to their intentions to go fight in Syria. Although New Zealanders already fighting in Syria may be deported under this act, it is unclear what other penalties could apply. Key expressed reluctance to follow Australia's example, wherein returning individuals may be arrested if they have committed criminal acts in war overseas. He refused to clarify who was arming these individuals, or whether they had connections to Al Qaeda.

Other topics discussed included imputation credits with Australia, and the proposed rail loop construction in Auckland.
