With a “heavy heart” Dr Pita Sharples resigned as co-leader of the Maori Party today.
At a press conference in his Wellington office Dr Sharples said he made the decision to step down to bring unity to the party.
The decision as to who will take over co-leadership will be made at a national conference in the coming weeks.
Mr Sharples said in the meantime he would continue with his ministerial roles, but planned to hand them over in the months leading up to the election in 2014.
